The study of microbial communities is a useful tool for monitoring the degradation of aquatic ecosystems. Using 16S rRNA gene sequencing, we analyzed the bacterial communities of the rivers Volga and Kazanka which are the water resources of the city of Kazan. Despite the lack of significant differences in the biodiversity of these river ecosystems, some microbial taxa indicate the degradation status of the Kazanka River ecosystems compared to the Volga River.
