Snow trout (Schizothorax Heckel, 1838) represent a diverse genus of cyprinid fishes of ecological and socio-economic significance in mountainous and sub-mountainous freshwater ecosystems throughout Asia, inhabiting major river systems from the Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau to Central Asia, often with high basin-level endemism. This review synthesizes current knowledge on their taxonomy, biogeography, ecology, and conservation, highlighting a complex taxonomic landscape shaped by ancient polyploidy and regional evolutionary processes. Schizothorax fishes display a wide spectrum of feeding strategies, from herbivory to omnivory, and are characterized by slow growth, late maturation, and low to moderate fecundity – life-history traits that limit demographic recovery and render many species vulnerable when combined with potamodromous migrations to spawning habitats. Schizothorax populations face pervasive threats, including overexploitation, habitat degradation and fragmentation, pollution, invasive species, and climate change, which have collectively resulted in population declines, one confirmed extinction, and numerous Red List listings across the genus. Significant knowledge gaps remain a barrier to effective management, particularly concerning taxonomy, the fundamental ecology of poorly studied species, the quantitative impacts of cumulative stressors, and species’ physiological capacity to adapt to environmental change. Resolving these gaps through targeted research, coupled with robust habitat protection, ecological restoration, and sustainable fisheries management, is essential for the long-term conservation of these fishes and the fragile aquatic ecosystems they inhabit.
